The second week of my practicum was a bit chaotic for me. It was totally out of my comfort zone. The 21st of September 2020 was my first day of teaching. Nervous, anxious, scared, excited, happy, all of the feelings were mixed, again. I got to teach real kids for the first time ever. I actually did not know what and how to feel about it. Before the class started, I submitted my lesson plan to my mentor for her to check. I started the class with an ice breaking session. I introduced myself, and I asked them to introduce themselves and their friends using pronouns. They looked so excited to get new English teacher. They were hyper and loud too. Luckily, I managed to handle them well on the first day. I decided to use pronouns in my ice breaking session mainly was because I wanted to teach Possessive Pronouns on that day. It made them more familiar with the vocabularies and ways to use it in sentences.
Every Tuesday, I had no class to teach. I usually used my free time to create
lesson plans, teaching aids, and also complete my journal. On the next day,
which was the 22nd of September 2020, I had to relief two classes, 1
Elit and 6 Bestari. I had no experience with
The next following day, 23rd of September 2020, I had class
at 7:30A.M. until 8:30A.M. For that class, I gave worksheets to the pupils. I
wanted to test their understanding on the previous lesson. The class was a bit
passive that day. Maybe it was because they were still shy and afraid to talk
in English to me. I had to guide them to complete the worksheets. My pupils
were mostly in intermediate level and a few of them were in low level. They
needed little guidance from me to answer the questions. Some of them got me to
explain everything in Malay language because they did not understand English at
all. After I ended my class, I continued
to create another lesson plan for the next day.
On Thursday, 24th of September 2020, I had a 30-minute class
with 4 Gemilang. I was really thankful actually because my classes were mostly
started at 7:30A.M. At that time, the pupils were still able to give full
cooperation with the lesson. On that day, I decided to focus on listening and
speaking skills. I introduced some new vocabularies to them and asked them to
pronounce it correctly. I had to do pronunciation session like that multiple
times because I wanted them to be comfortable to talk in English even if it was
just a simple phrase or word. For the listening skill part, I just ask them to
listen carefully to the song I played, and they had to sequence the lyrics
correctly. Some of them managed to get all correct but some of them did not.
They still needed guidance from me even though it was just sequencing. They
took longer time than their friends to sequence the lyrics. After all, I still
enjoyed myself guiding them. Later on that day, I had to enter year 1 Harmoni
and year 6 Gemilang to substitute their teachers. Both were Bahasa Melayu
class.I also entered my class, 4 Gemilang since their Science Teacher, Cikgu
Ariff Ismail could not teach on that day.
It was the last day of the week, Friday, 25th of September
2020, I went to school as usual. On that day, I taught 4 Gemilang about
recycling. It was a fun lesson since I got to know their opinions on recycling.
Later on that day, I had to substitute Cikgu Amran in 5 Dinamik. He taught
Bahasa Melayu to 5 Dinamik so I decided to assign the pupils with some activities
from their activity book.
